Example Strategy: Calming Hand Press

Objective: This simple activity gives your child calming “muscle feedback” that can help them feel more settled and in control when they’re overwhelmed.

How to try it:
Ask your child to press both hands firmly onto a table, desk, or even against a wall for about 10 seconds.

You might say: “Let’s press our hands down like we’re squishing invisible playdough. Can you feel your arms working?” Repeat as often as needed e.g. if your child looks fidgety and unsettled.

Why it works:
The strong, steady pressure sends calming signals to your child’s body and brain. It’s quick, quiet, and doesn’t need any special tools—perfect at home, in school, or out and about.

Extra tip:
You can make it more fun by showing a little picture of handprints with a countdown (10, 9, 8…) so your child knows exactly how long to press.
